Building of Leaf Shelters by Stenoma scitiorella Walker (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae): Manipulation of Host Plant Quality? Neotropical Entomology

Building of leaf shelters is a widespread behavior among microlepidopteran larvae. Apparently, these shelters provide refuge to caterpillars against bad weather and reduce the risks of predation and parasitism. Recent studies about nutritional ecology of insects have suggested that such behavior would actually be an strategy evolutionarily selected to maximize the quality of the host plant consumed by them. Stenoma scitiorella Walker caterpillars tie together young Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae) leaves to build a shelter in which they retreat, feeding exclusively on inner leaves. A espécie medicinal Maytenus ilicifolia (Mart. ex Reiss.) localiza-se naturalmente sob diferentes condições edafoclimáticas. Isto implica em prováveis mecanismos de adaptação das populações naturais, cujas características químicas podem estar fixadas geneticamente. Este estudo foi desenvolvido para determinar a influência do ambiente sobre a composição fitoquímica de M. ilicifolia. O trabalho visou avaliar o efeito de quatro níveis (0, 15, 30 e 45%) de concentrado, em substituição à silagem de sorgo, no consumo voluntário e digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca (MS), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições, analisados pelo SAS. Observaram-se consumos de MS (g dia-1 e % peso vivo) de 591,79 e 2,6; 709,60 e 3,0; 781,56 e 3,3; 798,03 e 3,36; de MO de 553,60; 664,47; 735,86 e 755,10 g dia-1. The traditional method of total excreta collection was applied, using 30 to 40 day old male Ross 308 broiler chickens. One hundred and eight broiler chickens were used, randomly assigned to a 3x3 factorial experimental design. The room temperatures were 14 C (cold), 25 °C (thermoneutral) and 32 °C (hot) and the three diets were 100% maize, 100% sorghum with tannin and 100% sorghum without tannin, with four replicates of each. Effect of caffeine and tannins on cultivation and fructification of Pleurotus on coffee husks BJM

The objective of this work was to study the effect of caffeine and tannins on Pleurotus sp. cultivation and to evaluate the feasibility of using coffee husks as substrate for mushroom cultivation. Eight strains of P. ostreatus and two strains of P. sajor-caju were screened on a medium prepared from agar extract of coffee husk. Based on best mycelial growth and biomass production, the strain P. ostreatus LPB 09 was selected for detailed studies. With the increase of caffeine concentration, the mycelial growth and the biomass production decreased, and no growth was observed when concentration of caffeine was 2500 mg/L. Efficacy of tannins from Mimosa pudica and tannic acid in neutralizing cobra (Naja kaouthia) venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.

In the present study, the effectiveness of Mimosa pudica tannins (MPT) in neutralizing the lethality of Naja kaouthia venom was compared with commercially derived tannins. Preincubation of MPT with N. kaouthia venom maintained 100% survival of mice after 24 hours. The mouse group in which there was no preincubation, no protection against the effects of the venom was observed. M. pudica tannin was found to be more effective in neutralizing the lethality of N. kaouthia venom when compared to commercial tannic acid. Two protein spots were missing in the two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) of the MPT treated mouse indicating the down-regulation of venom proteins. Extraction of tannin by Acacia mearnsii with supercritical fluids BABT

Studies were carried out on solvent and supercritical extraction to obtain natural tannins. The results showed that the best co-solvent to extract tannin with CO2 supercritical was water with a concentration of 5.0% and the best trap rinse solvent was methanol.

Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar as atividades dos inibidores de tripsina, hemaglutinante e teores de taninos no farelo de soja e na soja crua e processada, e avaliar o coeficiente de digestibilidade aparente da fração proteica para juvenis de pacu. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente da proteína da soja crua, extrusada, tostada e macerada foram determinadas usando óxido de cromo (0,5%) como marcador. Foi elaborada dieta de referência com 26% de proteína bruta e 4.352 kcal kg-1, e a cada alimento avaliado foram substituídas 30% da dieta-teste. As fezes foram coletadas por pressão abdominal. This study aimed to evaluate in situ degradability and degradation kinetics of DM, NDF and ADF of silage, with or without tannin in the grains. Two isogenic lines of grain sorghum (CMS-XS 114 with tannin and CMS-XS 165 without tannin) and two sorghum hybrids (BR-700 dual purpose with tannin and BR-601 forage without tannin) were ensiled; dried and ground silage samples were placed in nylon bags and introduced through the fistulas. Potential nutritional and antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts from leaves and stem bark of Anisophyllea laurina R. Br ex Sabine used in folk medicine BJPS

ABSTRACT Anisophyllea laurina is a plant that has been used in folk medicine to treat malaria, dysentery, diabetes, toothache and various skin diseases. Leaves extract had protein content of 9.68% and a high calcium content of 25084.317 mg/100 g while stem bark extract was found to contain greater amounts of calcium (8560.96 mg/100 g), potassium (7649.47 mg/100 g), magnesium (1462.49 mg/100 g) and iron (973.33 mg/100 g). Palmitic acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid and oleic acid were the most abundant fatty acids in leaves and stem bark extracts. Furthermore, total phenolic (2382.39 mg GAE /100 g) and total flavonoid (385.79 mg QE/100 g) contents were abundant in stem bark while leaves extract was rich in total tannin content (3466.63 mg CE/100 g)....

The relationship between sorghum grain color and tannin content was reported in several references. In this study, 33 phenotypes of sorghum grain differing in seed characteristics were collected and analyzed by Folin-Ciocalteu method. A computer image analysis method was used to determine the color characteristics of all 33 sorghum phenotypes. Two methods of multiple linear regression and artificial neural network (ANN) models were developed to describe tannin content in sorghum grain from three input parameters of color characteristics. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to develop a simple technique to remove astringency and maintain the pulp firmness of ‘Giombo’ persimmons. Fruit were packaged in three different plastic packages: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene-polyamide (PE-PA). Packages with dimensions of 30 cm x 50 cm and 20 µm thickness were sealed under vacuum. Fruit uncovered in plastic film were used as control samples. After packaging, fruits were stored at ambient conditions (22°C and 70% RH) for five days.
